Jan Kuhlemeier (1993) won the Van Vlissingen Art Foundation Prize in 2023. Fascinated by pristine nature and color, the artist traveled to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia in search of inspiration to influence new works.
His works, composed of tones and layers reminiscent of the hues present in the reflection of seas and oceans, are indicative of sights he, as an avid surfer, has seen in various places throughout the world. Jan Kuhlemeier: ‘Indonesia intrigues me with its contrasting greens and clear blue waters.’
A book about Jan’s journey, sources of inspiration and new works, the fourteenth edition in the Inspiration series, will be written by board member Titia Voûte and published by Waanders. His new works were exhibited in Museum Singer Laren.
Jan Kuhlemeier received his BA in Fine Arts from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in 2015. He uses translucent colors in his works. Herein, he searches for specific tints and color nuances and sees painting as a means to explore the boundaries that lie between painting and other forms of media. His work is a dance between motion, energy and pigmentation.
On the choice of Jan Kuhlemeier, Jop Ubbens, board member of the Foundation: “His work particularly appeals to me because of its aesthetic component and the directly attractive feeling his work evokes in me. His research into pigmentation and materials strikes me as well thought out. Additionally, he has a well-founded story about his artistic process. He reflects, thinks and develops himself. Jan Kuhlemeier is, in my opinion, a neo-romantic. He plays with movement, feeling, and dynamics in combination with the elements and does so in an infectious way.”
