About the artist

Vivian Ammerlaan (b. 1994) wins the John & Marine van Vlissingen Art Foundation Prize in 2025.

Vivian is inspired by landscapes and this spring will travel to the Rocky Mountains in Canada and the United States. In these impressive surroundings, she will look for ways to translate the grandeur, stillness and emptiness of the landscape into her work.

A book about Vivian’s journey, sources of inspiration and new works, the sixteenth edition in the Inspiration series, will also be published this year by Waanders. Her new work will be on view at Singer Laren from November 25, 2025 through January 4, 2026.

Vivian’s work revolves around creating fictional landscapes using digital and experimental analog techniques. She is inspired by memories, dreams and emotions that landscapes evoke. “I try to capture the essence of a place, not by an exact representation, but by what that place evokes in me,” Vivian says.

Vivian’s previous works explore themes of time and the sublime, and she combines everyday materials with photographic techniques to create layered, dreamlike images. In her latest work, she aims to further experiment with color and texture to represent the grandeur of nature.

Raised in De Lier (South Holland), Vivian developed a fascination for photography at an early age. After graduating from AKV St. Joost in Breda in 2016, her work quickly gained recognition. She won several awards, including talent prizes during the Kunst10daagse in Bergen and the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen and Ballon Rouge in Rotterdam, where she presented her solo exhibition Waanplekken in 2024.
